Caption: Silicone valve components. Macrophotograph of valve components made from silicones. All three are valve leaves, used to cover an inlet or outlet port of a fluid flow device. The components were made by etching processes. Silicones are polymeric derivatives of organosilicon compounds which have a Si-O-Si link. Silicone rubbers make useful valve leaves as they retain their elastic properties over a wide temperature range, and are inert to acids, alkalis and oxidising agents. Magnification x4 at 6x7cm size.
