Caption: Abnormal foetus head, ultrasound scan. This foetus has hydrocephaly, a condition in which cerebrospinal fluid collects in the ventricles of the brain. In foetuses and infants, as seen here, hydrocephaly can cause an abnormally rapid growth of the head, bulging fontanelles (membranous gaps between the skull plates) and a small face. Ultrasound scanning uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of an internal structure. Foetal ultrasound scanning is routine during pregnancy.
