Caption: Clostridium difficile spores surrounding a long Cl. difficile bacterium. The spores were purified but occasionally individual bacteria were found in the preparation. As a sporulating bacterium, Cl. difficile is a dangerous pathogen, particularly in hospitals. Spores are considerably more resistant to disinfecting agents than bacterial cells. Enhanced SEM. Image width: 9.85 micrometers. Magnification: 10,150x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
