Caption: Dicotyledon leaf. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a typical dicotyledon leaf. The section passes through the midrib. Under the upper epidermis is a layer of palisade mesophyll (green) with chloroplasts and beneath this a spongy mesophyll (blue). In the middle of the lamina are small leaf veins (red-blue) and the single large vein (vascular bundle) of the midrib. At centre is a ring of primary xylem (red) with large vessels. Inside the vascular ring is a pith-like centre filled with parenchyma cells (blue-pink). Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
