White Island, known by the Maori name Whakaari, is an active andesite stratovolcano, that lies 48 kilometres off the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, in the Bay of Plenty. Its last eruption was in 2000/2001 and the volcano is currently New Zealand's most frequently active. Imaged in August 2000.
