Tissue engineering - creating a brand new organ or other tissue from outside the body - is a bold new science aiming to replace the need for organ transplants. The most important aspect of this is the "scaffold" in which cells can attach, grow and function healthily. The scaffolds are biologically alive and are biodegradeable once the organ has established itself in the body.
