Scientists in Cardiff, Wales, have developed a way of using DNA codes to "mark" materials as diverse as designer shoes, banknotes, precious stones, oil and toxic waste. The DNA codes have an almost infinite number of combinations and these are bonded to microscopic beads which then attach themselves to the material.
