NASA's spacecraft Deep Impact is due for launch in January 2004. It will spend 18 months crossing the solar system towards a rendez-vous with comet Temple 1. Using its cameras it will survey the surface, and scientists will then select a target for a 500 kilogram projectile. The impact will create an enormous, and cause gas and dust to erupt into space. This will be analysed back on Earth in the hopes of gaining new insight into the formation of our Solar System.
