Our understanding of the world around us owes much to the ability of exploring visible and invisble parts of the spectrum. Only in the past 100 years have we explored the invisible frequencies and used them to our benefit. We use radio to listen to signals from far distant regions in the universe; x-rays to probe into the human body; infrared to make heat pictures; ultraviolet to look at the Sun; microwaves to peer inside storms or cook our food; gamma radiation to cure tumours or kill people. Even the previsouly unexplored Terahertz frequencies are yielding benefits in the fight against terrorism.
