Since their invention in the 1970's barcodes have proved a simple, easy to use and cheap way to keep track of product stock. But the information contained on the barcode is no more than a number or price. So a new system is being developed known as the 'smart tag' or RFID - a computer chip with antennae that can store a lot more information as well as being able to be tracked.
