Astronomers have discovered over 1,000 planets outside our solar system. Astronomers have classified these ‘exoplanets’ by size: ‘hot Jupiters’ that are essentially giant balls of hot gas; ‘super-Earths’ that have rocky cores but can be ten times larger than our own planet; down to ‘Earth-like’ which are only a few times larger than Earth. Here’s a selection of the weirdest and most interesting. It’s worth bearing in mind that these are just the exoplanets we know about: some estimates reckon there could be billions of exoplanets out there in the galaxy.
