Satellite image of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The image on the left was photographed by the Landsat 5 satellite on 2nd February 1985. At that time, the population of Abu Dhabi was around 566,000. The image on the right was photographed by the Landsat 8 satellite on 26th June 2014. The exploitation of Abu Dhabi's oil reserves has made it the wealthiest emirate of the UAE, itself one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Since 1985, several man-made islands have been created off the cost of Abu Dhabi, including the island of Al Lulu, which covers around four square kilometres. As of 2012, the population of Abu Dhabi is 2.33 million.
