Susumu Nishinaga from Toyama, Japan was one of the best scanning electron microscopists in the world. SEMs are produced in black and white and then coloured according to the aesthetics of the image maker. The sheer vibrancy and exuberance of his colours creates an immediate impact. Susumu loved strong, bright, outrageous colours with no pretence at naturalism. Behind the colouring the images are equally powerful, whether startling like the germinating seed or patterned like the intestines and blood vessels. Susumu died in the summer of this year. He will be greatly missed.
