A revolution in robot design is underway. Pioneered by Professor Jean Louis Deneubourg at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, the new robots are based on the study of ants. Professor Deneubourg and his colleagues found that ant colonies are an example of order emerging spontaneously out of chaos. Individually the ant seems rather stupid. However, a group of ants in a colony behave as a highly sophisticated team. Such insights are now being turned into a radical new way of building robots to do specific jobs. "Robot Insects" may soon guard factories, mow lawns and even explore Mars.
