This sequence of four images of increasing magnification show bacteria on the tip of a syringe. The scanning electron micrographs have been computer coloured to reveal just how dirty the syringe is. The stubby cylindrical bacilli are the kind of bacteria that might give a drug addict an infection. These images were made by Dr Tony Brain of King's College, University of London.
