A spectacular night-time image reveals the extent of light pollution in the Padena Plain in Italy. this area is one f the most populated, and the 'alien' effect is due to the different types of street lights from several small towns and villages diffusing through fog. Over the last 20 years, light pollution has crept across the world obscuring the star filled sky. As astronomers point out, light pollution isn't just a scientific nuisance - it is also a waste of energy.
