Egypt is a vast desert plateau covering about one million square kilometres of North Africa. From space, one features stands out above all: the River Nile and its great fan shaped delta. 8000 years ago, the newly formed delta was one of the most fertile areas of the planet. But as these images from America's Landsat show, the land of the Pharaohs is now under threat from over population and environmental engineering.
