Dr Kevin Pang of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California has proved that the biggest volcanic eruption in recorded history took place between the islands of Epi and Tongoa, 2000 kilometres south of Australia. to date the eruption at Kuwae was an ancient folk tale. but geological examination of the crater suggests the 40 cubic kilometres of rock and dust were blown into the atmosphere resulting in a global change in weather conditions. by studying historical records of Europe and China, combined with scientific evidence from ice cores and oak timbers, Dr Pang has shown that the gigantic eruption took place in 1453.
