Space scientists have dubbed Pluto as the Mount Everest of Solar System exploration. Now NASA engineers hope to conquer Pluto by sending two spacecraft on a five billion kilometre journey to the last unvisited planet in the Solar System. The spacecraft must be designed to survive a deep space cruise of 8 years and still be functioning perfectly during the few hours of observing time as they pass the planet. But the Pluto flyby spacecraft will only be launched if the design and launch costs are kept to half that of the 1970s missions like Voyager.
