The world's first genetically engineered beer has been developed by a team of scientists at the brewing Research Foundation in the UK. The team, led by Professor Bernard Atkinson, have had their first success with a "designer yeast" which converts more carbohydrates into alcohol, reducing the number of calories in the final beer. The British Government's advisory committee on genetically engineered food and drink has given its approval to the brew, and the revolutionary Nutfield Lyte is now being produced.
