These stunning images are the first to be released from NASA's Space Radar laboratory flight which took place in April. Two huge radar instruments: X-SAR, a German-Italian joint venture, and Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C (Sir-C) built by NASA, were mounted on shuttle Endeavour's cargo bay. The flight lasted nearly two weeks and astronauts managed to map more than 70 million square kilometers - about 12 percent of the planet's total surface area. Scientists are hoping that the result will give them new insights into the prcesses that shape the global environment.
