Air pollution is one of the world's most serious environmental problems. But now a laser based system is being developed by researchers in the US that can pin-point and analyse sources of air pollution over towns and cities. Known as LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging), the system can produce 3-D images of pollutants in the atmosphere and measure pollution rates. In addition LIDAR can detect sources of illegal dumping of hazardous pollutants.
