The wonderfully elaborate microscopic skeletal structures found on marine algae have now been reporduced synthetically by British chemist Professor Stephen Mann. He and his team have produced hollow porous shells of crystalline calcium carbonate which potentially has many commercial uses owing to their low density and huge surface area, such as drug delivery implant sytems.
