Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, Virginia, USA, have developed a laser light thinner than a human hair, yet 60 billion times more intense than the surface of the Sun. The laser has the potential to revolutionise the way materials are handled as it can cut through far faster and with greater precision than any existing tool. Another property is that it cqan alter the surface of materials simply and without the need for harsh, environmentally troublesome, chemicals.
