Dental decay - or caries as it is known - begins when bacteria feed on sugars in plaque and release lactic acid as a waste product. This acid then dissolves tooth enamel, which eventually leads to a cavity if left untreated. Our scanning electron microscope show in frightening detail, the plaque present on a person's tooth.
