Professor John Oxford, of St Bartholemews Hospital, London, is examining tissue samples from patients who have died of viral pneumonia in 1918. He is using the latest DNA detection techniques to try and solve the mystery as to why so many people died from that influenza pandemic (estimated at being 20 million men and women).
