One of the most spectacular possibilities of virtual reality is the prospect of visiting places and events a thousand miles away - or a thousand years ago - without leaving home. Known as 'virtual tourism', it may solve the problem of congestion at popular places like Venice; make available to the public sealed-off sites like the Lascaux Caves; and even re-create vanished wonders of the past like the building of the Pyramids.
