First Parachute Jump

October 27, 1997 marks the 200th anniversary of the world's first true parachute jump. It was made by a Frenchman called Andre-Jacques Garnerin who jumped out of a hydrogen balloon riding in a gondola which was fixed by lines to his home-made canvas parachute.
