Caption

Tarantula hawk wasp (Pepsis sp.) searching for spiders on the forest floor. This wasp paralyses a tarantula, drags it to a burrow and lays an egg on it. The larva emerges and feeds on the living tarantula until it metamorphosises into an adult. The adult wasp itself feeds on nectar. The wasp has an exceptionally painful sting, but is docile and does not generally sting unprovoked. Filmed on the Amazonian slopes of the Andes in Ecuador.
