Aerial telegraph: ancient Roman signal towers, c1900. A basket containing fire was hung from an arm near the top of the tower and used to signal a message to the next tower in a chain. The message was then passed along the to the next in the chain of similar towers. Trade card for Liebig Meat Extract.
