Caption

Stinging nettle leaf. Polarised light micrograph of the underside of a stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) leaf. Two types of hairs are seen, the hairs with a bulbous base are the stinging hairs and the smaller curved ones are non-stinging hairs. This image was created using an epithelial peel to chemically remove the top layer of the leaf. Magnification: x44 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
