Cucumber flower bud. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the flower bud of a cucumber (Cucurbita sp.). The female pistil (red) containing the ovary that houses the female sex cells is at lower centre. Surrounding that are male anthers (pink, upper centre), each of which have four pollen sacs filled with developing pollen grains, or male sex cells (dark red). Encasing these are the petals and sepals of the bud. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
