Samuel Crompton, English inventor of the spinning mule, c1880s. Between 1772 and 1779 Crompton invented the spinning mule frame, a cross between James Hargreaves' spinning jenny and Richard Arkwright's water-frame spinning machine. The spinning mule made it possible to spin almost any type of yarn very quickly. Artist: James Morrison.
