Buttercup flower bud. Light micrograph of a longitudinal section through the flower bud of a buttercup (Ranunculus sp.). The female pistil (red) containing the ovary that houses the female sex cells (ovules, black) is at centre. Surrounding that are male anthers (orange and white, upper centre), each of which have four pollen sacs filled with developing pollen grains, or male sex cells (black and red). Encasing these are the petals and sepals of the bud. Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
