Caption

Foetus with duodenal atresia. Ultrasound scan showing a 'double bubble', comprising of air pockets (black circles) in the stomach and one in the duodenum (where the small intestine connects to the stomach), indicating duodenal atresia (DA). DA is a birth defect in which the duodenum is completely closed off (or absent altogether), preventing food from passing through the digestive system. Ultrasound scanning uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image of an internal structure. Foetal ultrasound scanning is routine during pregnancy.
