Caption

Kidney infection. Light micrograph showing a section through a kidney infected by bacteria. Here the infection has reached the pelvis (pyelum) of the kidney causing inflammation (nephritis). This is known as acute pyelonephritis. Early abscess formation can be seen (dense patch, lower left) along with a clump of bacteria (solid purple patch, far right). A large number of neutrophils (white blood cells, dark specs) can be seen having infiltrated the kidney.
