Volume measurement, 1 of 2. Volume of an irregular solid (limestone rock) is measured with a graduated cylinder using a displacement method. First some water is added to the cylinder and the volume is recorded (18.7 mL, Photo 1). Then the rock is put in the cylinder and the new volume reading is taken (25.9 mL, Photo 2). The difference (7.2 mL) is the volume of the rock.
