Oxidation of glycerine by potassium permanganate, 1 of 3. A couple of drops of glycerine (C3H8O3) are placed onto a pile of potassium permanganate (KMnO4). The exothermic reaction takes a few seconds to start. As glycerine heats up, the reaction speeds up, white smoke appears and glycerine bursts into flames. The redox reaction is: KMnO4 + C3H8O3 -> K2CO3 + Mn2O3 + CO2 + H2O.
