Severe bunion. Foot of patient with a severe bunion (hallux valgus, centre left). Bunions are swellings of the joint between the big toe and the first metatarsal bone. They cause the base of the big toe to project outwards and the tip to point inwards. Here it is so severe that the big toe has been forced under the middle two toes. Bunions are thought to be caused primarily by ill-fitting shoes. The deformity can be corrected surgically.
