Large Helical Device. Interior of the Large Helical Device (LHD) at the National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), Toki, Gifu, Japan. This is a stellarator, a device that uses magnetic fields to confine hot plasma in order to sustain nuclear fusion reactions. The LHD IS the largest superconducting stellarator in the world and is used for research on plasma confinement.
