Ginger rhizome. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through a rhizome (underground stem) from a ginger plant (Zingiber officinale). An oil globule (yellow, upper centre) is seen in a secretory cell. Starch granules and xylem vessels are also visible. Ginger is a pungent herb commonly used worldwide as a cooking spice. Magnification: x455 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
