Passenger aircraft construction. Worker using an isolation cabinet to weld sections of titanium pipework for use in an Airbus passenger plane. To keep the weight of an aircraft down ultra-light titanium piping is used wherever possible, such as in the air-conditioning system. These pipes must be welded under an argon shield. Shielding gases are used in certain types of welding to prevent contamination by other atmospheric gases which may reduce the quality of the weld.
