Wildlife scenes, Roman mosaic. Mosaics consist of small pieces of coloured glass or stone, used to form an image or pattern on a floor or wall. This is a two-panel mosaic that shows a cat attacking a small hen in the upper panel. In the lower panel, the birds have been identified as chaffinches, a teal and a shelduck. Shellfish (including a scallop) are also seen, along with comber fishes (right). This mosaic, from the House of the Faun, Pompeii, is displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Naples, Italy.
