Cave painting of a bison. Artwork of a cave painting found on the roof of the Altamira Cave in northern Spain, which was inhabited during the the Upper Palaeolithic period (the final period of the Old Stone Age). It is thought that the cave was inhabited during two periods, one 18,500 years ago, and another around 15,000 years ago. The painting, which depicts a bison, dates from the latter period. It is over 60 centimetres long, and was made using materials such as charcoal, ochre and haematite. The cave was discovered in 1879. Artwork from the 1913 edition of Prehistoric Times (Sir John Lubbock).
