Black-crowned night heron. Close-up of the head of a young black-crowned night heron (Nycticorax nycticorax). These birds are found throughout a large part of the world, except in the coldest regions and Australasia. Young birds are brown, flecked with white and grey whereas adult birds are white or grey with a black crown and back. Like all herons, they wade in shallow water, catching fish and other water animals using their long beak. Photographed in the Coastal Plains, Israel, in October.
