Caption

Coloured barium X-ray (oblique view) of the oesophagus of a young patient, showing varices (varicose veins) affecting its structure. Oesophageal varices occur when liver damage causes high blood pressure in the portal vein, causing nearby veins in the oesophagus to widen. The veins may rupture, causing bouts of vomiting, and surgery is required.
