Light micrograph of a section through the wall of the large intestine (colon), showing smooth muscle fibres (pink, at top and bottom) orientated perpendicular to each other. At centre in the collagen (red), are purple cells, the Auerbach's plexus (or myenteric plexus); the cells more clearly violet with a round nucleus and nucleolus are the ganglion nerve cells (neurons). At top right is Meissner's plexus. HES stain. Magnification: x550 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
