Caption

Light micrograph of a section through the enlarged wall of the large intestine (colon) in Hirschsprung's disease, a genetic condition. The glandular surface (at top) and smooth muscle fibres (pink) of the colon are seen. In the collagen (yellow) are purple cells, the Auerbach's plexus (or myenteric plexus), which usually contain ganglion nerve cells (neurons) but in Hirschsprung's disease these are absent. HES stain. Magnification: x275 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
