Light micrograph of a section through the enlarged wall of the large intestine (colon) in Hirschsprung's disease, a genetic condition. Smooth muscle fibres (pink) of the colon are seen. In the collagen (yellow) are purple cells, the Auerbach's plexus (or myenteric plexus), which usually contain ganglion nerve cells (neurons) but in Hirschsprung's disease these are absent. HES stain. Magnification: x550 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
