Laser treatment of varicose veins. Close-up of a surgeon using a catheter inserted into a varicose vein to apply laser energy (red beams) to treat the condition. Varicose veins are lengthened and dilated veins that can develop just below the surface of the skin. They can occur for no apparent reason. Laser treatment uses bursts of laser light to heat up the vein, and makes it slowly fade and disappear. If used by a skilled surgeon, the proper type of laser can be tightly focused on the area being treated.
